ART DECO GUIDED WALKS
Let our experienced Walk Guides show you Napier’s Deco Delights.
Your guided walk through the world-famous Art Deco City Centre
includes an introductory slide presentation, guided walk, information
booklet plus optional video screening and refreshments.
Guided walks start at the Art Deco Shop, 163 Tennyson St. Fri
18, Sat 19 and Sun 20 July at 2 pm. Allow 2½ hours for the full
programme. Tickets $20. Bookings essential.

BEROCCA BRUNCH
Sponsored by McEntee Hire
Banish the blues and clear the cobwebs at
this bountiful brunch with the million dollar view. This is another
chance to view the polished perfection of the vintage cars.
Sun 20 July. Available from 9 am to noon. Quayside Restaurant,

BERTIE’S BRUNCH

Rub the sleep from your eyes and join Bertie for
a nutritious brunch in the rich surroundings of the Hawke’s Bay Club.
This will be followed by Dress and Process which departs the Club at
11am. You are encouraged to join this street parade of classic vintage
cars and deco duds!

CLASSIC CINEMA (Associated Event)
THE WOMEN (USA, 1939)

George Cukor directed an all-star (and all female) cast including
Joan Crawford, Norma Shearer, Rosalind Russell, Joan Fontaine and
Paulette Goddard in the hilarious adaptation of the play by Clare
Booth Luce about divorce, cattiness and competition in the circle of
“friends”. Art Deco never looked better in movies that in this one. The
Art Director was Cedric Gibbons (he also did GRAND HOTEL) and the
costume design by Adrian. The beauty salon at the beginning of the
movie and the night club at the end are creamy and curvaceous like
never before or since.

CLUB COSMOPOLITAINE – DINE & DANCE
Hawke’s Bay Jazz Club Big Band will provide the songs and the dance
music while you dine in Art Deco elegance. Not BYO. Bar available.

CRAWLIN’ THE QUAY
Three great waterside venues on West Quay Ahuriri plus three
great jazz bands. This crawl will give you a great Sunday lunch in a
wonderful quayside setting. Each course of your meal will be in a
different venue and each venue will feature a different band. What a
convivial way to enjoy great music!

Enjoy your entrée and main at Acqua Restaurant before moving
to the theatre for the concert, then it is back to the restaurant for
dessert and coffee. The concert features The New Zealand School of
Music Jazz Orchestra - musical director Rodger Fox. From the USA
internationally acclaimed jazz trumpeter CLAY JENKINS who teaches
at the Eastman School of Music, and from New Zealand acclaimed
classical guitarist MATTHEW MARSHALL.

DRESS AND PROCESS (Free Event)
Join with us in our street parade of bands, classic vintage cars and
deco duds as we march from the Hawke’s Bay Club to Emerson St and
start the Vintage Vroom in style.

10.45am with the Parade stepping off at 11am. 


FASHION FLAUNT (Free Event)

Get those classy clothes out of the closet and
enter the numerous fun competitions on this fashion afternoon.
Join us for an hour of fun and prizes. Categories are: Ladies, Gents,
Groups, Kids up to 12, and Kids 13-18. Registrations at the old Foyer
of the Theatre (The Port of Napier Foyer) from 11.30am on the day.

FLICKS AND CHIPS
Settle down to a good old community night in the church hall. Enjoy
an array of short fi lms from the Three Stooges, Spike Jones, and Laurel
& Hardy, plus a Universal Newsreel, a Pete Smith Special and a Woody
Woodpecker cartoon. Dinner will be fi sh and chips straight from the
packet, and a steaming mug of tea. Community movies how they
used to be.

GENTLE JAZZ WIND-DOWN

JAZZAMATAZZ (Free Event)

A Mardi-Gras style celebration of jazz music. From 1pm
to 4pm the following establishments will have a band
performing. Entry is free. Wander the Art Deco city and
enjoy the variety of styles and sounds. Look for the big
red balloons that mark the location of each venue. (See

John Fletcher and Dave Boston combine to entertain you
with stylish, quality Jazz.

Acqua Restaurant – Masonic Hotel Marine Parade

groovy hits from jazz to blues to latin.

Wok U Want Mongolian Restaurant – Marine Parade
The Twin City Stompers are the iconic Hawke’s Bay
jazz band and they’ll keep your foot tapping right
throughout the afternoon.

Napier Cosmopolitan Club – Hastings St.
The Dixie Dudes entertain with their inimitable fun and
frolicky style of dixie music. The line up features trumpet,
sousaphone, banjo and clarinet and is led by Kevin Clark.

Take 5 Jazz Restaurant – Marine Parade.
The John Redmond Quartet digs into the Great
American Songbook and presents the great songs from
one of the great jazz periods.

The Cri Coffee House & Brasserie - Market St.
The Rodger Fox Experience – Take one of New Zealand’s
top jazz exponents and surround him with high quality
musicians and you have an afternoon of jazz that should
not be missed.

Municipal Theatre Auditorium – Tennyson St.
Tropical Downbeat Orchestra – The fresh face of funk,
soul and jazz strut their stuff. Top local musicians in a
top quality combination. (This performance starts at
2pm.)

Old Red + Gallery – Tennyson St.
(Old Red Cross Rooms almost opposite the
Municipal Theatre).
Kevin Watson and Michelle entertain in the art gallery
setting of one of Napier’s iconic buildings. Enjoy the
Deco artworks and the soft jazz sounds. Wine and food
available.

JUMP JIVE AND DINE

A stylish buffet meal on stage in the wonderful Art Deco
Municipal Theatre as you enjoy the up-beat style of the Dave
Atkin Band. A fi ne meal in fi ne surroundings with some wine
included in the price after which a cash bar is available.

MILES AHEAD - A MUSICAL TRIBUTE TO JAZZ ICON COMPOSER/

“MODA” ART EXHIBITION (Free Event)
Featuring Ingrid Boot and Nick Fedaeff
Ingrid Boot
English Artist, Ingrid Boot has lived in New Zealand now since 2000 and
she paints in a realistic and Illustrative style. She sees beauty in many
subjects from the desolate to the glamourous.
Nick Fedaeff
Nick’s paintings are dynamic and vibrant. They show his diverse artistic
potential. Traditionally Nick uses oils on canvas, but also practices with
acrylic and aqua paints.

NIGHTCAPS (Free Event)
If your watch is telling you to go to sleep but your body wants a
nightcap, then stroll down to the Hawke’s Bay Club after 10.30pm. Entry
is free to those in Art Deco Costume. Cash bar available.

PALM COURT BALLROOM
A terpsichorean treat for all you gliders and sliders to the sumptuous
sounds of La Bella Vita string quartet. Patent leather pumps are optional!
Tea and scones will be served.

PUTT PUTT ON PARADE (Associated Event)
Don your Art Deco attire – (plus fours and furs an advantage, but not a
necessity), to swing a round of seaside putting on the Parade at Par 2 –
Marine Parade MiniGolf. Each player is eligible to enter in the draw for a
special prize. Players dressed in Art Deco style will receive a $2 discount
per round.
By the Soundshell, beside the Sea, Marine Parade, Napier. Open
Daily from 9.30am to 4.30pm (last tee-off).


RSA BRASSERIE BRUNCH (Associated Event)
Start your Saturday with a stroll into the Napier RSA where you will
fi nd a brunch designed to stave off the chills of winter as you embark
on your weekend of Deco and Jazz in the city.

SKYBEAM (Free Event)
Join Wayne and his Skybeam HB team by the Sound Shell as they
make their WW2 searchlight track across the night sky. Just wander
in - they are happy to answer questions.
Sat 19 July from 6pm to 10pm.

SWINGIN’ SUNDAY
Calling all jitterbuggers, jivers and swingers. Swing by and groove to
some cool sounds from Bertie’s eclectic collection of recorded swing
dance music.

TA TA TEA AND TIFFIN
Before departing the Art Deco City and returning to normal life as you
know it, take a fi nal sumptuous farewell tea at the Hawke’s Bay Club.

Warm hands and hearts by a roaring (glowing) fi re in the mellow

THE HISTORY OF JAZZ
Join Rodger Fox and the NZ School of Music Big Band in this 80
minute introduction to jazz. This performance traces the development
of jazz from ragtime to jazz fusion - from the 1920s to today. A
fascinating and informative performance that features some of NZ’s
top young musicians.

THOROUGHLY MODERN MILLIE (Associated Event)
This high-spirited musical romp through the 1920s, tells the story of
young Millie Dillmount in a New York full of intrigue and jazz - a time
when the rules of love and social behaviour were
changing forever. Filled with frisky fl appers, dashing leading men
and a dragon-lady of a villainess audiences will love to hate. Dinner
& Show included – Please be seated by 7pm – Camelot Lounge open
from 6pm.

VINTAGE DECO CAR TOUR
Travel in a beautifully restored vintage Buick and visit the remarkable
National Tobacco Company Building, the Deco houses and gardens in
the suburb of Marewa, and the grand Edwardian Hawke’s Bay Club.
