Preservation

The Trust was established in 1985 as a preservation society. The founders believed that the buildings were important not only for their aesthetic and historical importance, but also for the economic benefits that they could bring to Napier, and to Hawke’s Bay, as a world class tourist attraction.

However because the buildings were only 55 years old at that time, and buildings of the recent past tend not to be valued, they recognised that for their heritage value be taken seriously, it would first be necessary to first demonstrate those economic benefits. And so all of the Trust’s activities and events, interpretative walks and tours, and then merchandising formed a part of its preservation strategy.

Other preservation strategies for the Trust include:
  • To persuade owners that their Art Deco buildings are worthy of preservation
  • To encourage the enhancement of a significant number of buildings
  • To advise owners on the restoration and enhancement of their buildings
  • To recognise restoration projects with its annual Art Deco Awards.
The Trust relies on Memberships and donations to continue this work.
