LEARNED LECTURE #2
Felix Kelly: a Kiwi at Brideshead

The curator of the exhibition Felix Kelly: a Kiwi at Brideshead, Dr Don Bassett, will talk about the expatriate Kiwi artist Felix Kelly who left New Zealand in 1935 and hit the big time socially in Britain until his death in 1994. His career seems like a real-life fulfilment of Charles Ryder’s in Evelyn Waugh’s famous novel, Brideshead Revisited (published 1945). When Granada TV filmed the famous 1980s serial with Jeremy Irons as Ryder, Castle Howard in Yorkshire (where Kelly painted a set of murals) made a splendid ‘Brideshead’. Like Ryder, Kelly cultivated the rich, the famous, and the royal as his clientele, but he also remembered his homeland too in curious paintings more fantasy than fact.

REPERTORY PLAY (Associated Event)
Dangerous Corner, written by J.B.Priestly, opened in 1932 at the Lyric Theatre, London. At a party hosted by Robert and his wife Freda, along with the partners and staff of Robert’s publishing firm, they all chatter inconsequentially about the nature of truth until the subject of Robert’s late brother crops up. A fateful, chance remark by Olwen, the publisher’s secretary, raises new questions about the brother’s suicide. Soon Robert’s dogged inquires expose an ever-widening circle of secrets, until every character and relationship is tested and revealed to be other than it appears. It was a quite shocking play in the thirties with references to drug addiction, infidelity, and homosexuality. It is an entertaining evening of intrigue and suspense, a play with fangs attached where you least expect them.
