The story of a remarkable woman, Georgina Burne Hetley, an early botanical artist who used her talent to capture both the beauty and scientific details of New Zealand’s flora.

She wrote in 1881: “It was on hearing a lecture from Mr Cheeseman, in Auckland, after his return from an expedition to the mountains about Nelson, and to Arthurs Pass and the Otira Gorge, Canterbury, when he showed us dried specimens of beautiful flowers of different colours, and described how lovely they looked growing in their native state, that I first thought, what a pity it was they were not painted.”

Decades before any form of welfare state had been envisaged—the poor and disadvantaged relied entirely on the charity and good will of other people, and there was a strong element of charitable philanthropy in the community. At the turn of the 20th century men and women in Hawke’s Bay were deeply concerned about the poverty and conditions of many women and children in New Zealand.

Elizabeth Pishief will give an illustrated talk about three women who made a significant contribution to the welfare of others, especially women and children, during the 20th century.

These women are Margaret Caro, Helen Lowry and Jan Williams.

Margaret Caro was the first woman dentist in New Zealand and a founding member of the Bethany Rescue Home, a non-secular institution established mainly by members of the Seventh Day Adventist church.

Helen Lowry financially supported Bethany in its various forms for over fifty years and was a major national benefactor to a variety of important causes as well as the National President of the New Zealand Red Cross.

Jan Williams was a trustee of the Hawke’s Bay Addiction Centre Trust, and a major benefactor of Springhill Addiction Centre. Her philanthropic legacy has been carried on for decades by the charitable trusts she and her husband set up.
